I was born in Donggang (near Suncheon), South Korea. After receiving my bachelor's degree in chemistry at Gyeongsang National University in Chinju, I majored in organic and analytical chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Shim Sung Lee at the same university. My research was focused on the organic synthesis of oxygen-sulfur mixed donor macrocycles, the synthesis and structural characteristics of coordination polymers and supramolecular complexes, solvent extractions, NMR titrations, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. I have had some specialty training in the operation and structure refinement for single crystal X-ray crystallography. In 2003, after receiving my Ph.D. degree, I started my first postdoctoral fellow, (my fellowship was awarded from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)), at the Nanoarchitectonics Research Center (NARC) of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) with Dr. Masumi Asakawa (host researcher) and Dr. Toshimi Shimizu (group director) on “Synthesis of the [2]rotaxanes incorporating metallosalen or metallosalophen moieties". In 2005, I moved to Prof. J. Fraser Stoddart group at UCLA and I started my second postdoctoral fellow with interesting projects. When I have free time I enjoy going to beaches, museums, libraries and parks with my family.
