I was born in the beautiful, fascinating and friendly country of Portugal “some years ago”. I have a degree (1991-1997) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (1999-2002) from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. In 1997, I was awarded a University Fellowship to carry out research in computational chemical engineering in the École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques, Nancy, France. As a PhD student, I worked on surface and colloid chemistry, electrokinetics phenomena of fibre surface, polymer and fibre science as well as structural, mechanical and optical paper characterization. While a postgraduate student, I received a University Research Fellowship to perform part of my PhD studies in UMIST, Manchester, UK.
In June 2002, I joined the Research Laboratories of Professor Jon Preece, School of Chemistry, The University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK as a Postdoctoral Fellow, where we developed the concept of precision chemical engineering, which represents a new manufacturing paradigm for creation of three-dimensional nanoarchitectures by hybrid top-down/bottom-up processes. Through my journey in this exciting “nano-world”, in August 2004, I joined Stoddart’s group at UCLA.
I prefer to spend my spare time taking it easy and lazying it out in the sofa watching TV or listening to music. I also enjoy a good movie, relaxing with friends, reading, going to the gym and, when time permits, travelling.
