I was born in Houston, Texas, but spent most of my impressionable years growing up in Roanoke, Virginia.  Roanoke is known as the “Star City of the South” and features the world’s second largest man-made star, lit up every night for your viewing pleasure.

I left Roanoke for bigger and better things at MIT, where I majored in chemistry and had the pleasure of getting my first research experience working in the laboratory of Prof. Tim Swager.  During my time in Boston I developed a taste for the local cuisine and an obsession with the Red Sox that continues to this day.  Despite my love for all things New England, I moved west to UC-Berkeley for graduate school, and greatly enjoyed my time earning my Ph.D. working alongside the extraordinary people of Prof. Jean M. J. Fréchet’s group.

I’d been a swimmer my whole life and I took up ocean swimming when I moved to California.  When I lived in Berkeley, I would wake up early in the morning to swim in the frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay.  I have made the swim from Alcatraz more than a dozen times, swam north to Marin directly underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, and from Candlestick Park all the way around the peninsula to the west end of Fisherman’s Wharf.  If you are in the Bay Area, check out the South End Rowing Club, the best open water swimming club in the world.  Now that I’ve moved south to Los Angeles, I’m getting to know a new set of ocean landmarks and training for longer distances in cold water.

I also love to cook, especially on my new toy, a Weber charcoal grill. I spend the rest of my time with my beautiful wife, Laura, debating which breed(s) of dog(s) we will eventually adopt.
